To respect others disability……..

Today i was shopping in a mall when i see 2 men, the staff guys were making fun of one of their stammerer colleague. One was about 35 yrs old and the other was 25.The 25 one was imitating his stammering and laughing while the mature one was not much reacting to him.I was just shopping nearby, so, i just interrupted them in between and asked that guy NOT TO make fun of stammering of his colleague.

He told me that they are just discussing their PERSONAL matter.I replied on it that making fun of someone’s disability is not a personal matter and he should be mature enough not to do such a thing.

He felt sorry to me, and they just changed the topic.I told him that I too stammers and he would feel very bad if he come to know that you imitates him behind.

In this incident, an educated and adult person was making fun of stammering.

People’s understanding and reaction towards stammering has to be changed.

And for that, there is a  requirement of complete ACCEPTANCE towards our speech impediment if we want to see the society taking it as NORMAL.

Thank you Ashish, for doing what SLPs should have been doing: changing the social attitudes as the subject matter specialist..
Since few SLP care to do this, let us do it ourselves. Because unless the social attitudes are changed, no "technique" is going to help us in the long run..
You have also demonstrated how to be assertive WITHOUT being aggressive. This is a very important inter-personal skill..
    Keep walking..

You have done a good thing Ashish. You have created awareness about stammering atleast to one person. if everyone do like this, the society can be easily get awareness about stammering. Keep on doing this.
