What I Can Say...
I find it more a gift than a curse
I’m different, I’m special, I’m unique
I open my mouth, and the words don’t come out
The walls are caving in
I take a deep breath
Search for the strength
I long to be normal
And am proud to be different
I’ve had it since I’ve been born
It’s apart of me, in my blood
I tackle my fear
Speak my mind
I’m important
I matter
I speak and speak
And stutter and stutter
It feels good
I feel free
It’s not about what I can’t say
But what I can say
...And that’s everything!

During my days as a trainer, I was very fond of using riddles as energizers in between hectic sessions. As such, I was always on the look out for good riddles. Once I found one, which was really good. It taught me the importance of going beyond the frame of reference, when faced with a problem which apparently has no solution.

Dear TISA I am going to tell you a story about me and life , so that other people realize that they are not alone in having such feelings and experiences. I don’t know when my stammering started. My parents told me that when I was 5 years old, muje bahout bukhar aaya tha (I ran high fever) and then suddenly stammering appeared. May be, the reason was the side effects of medicines. I am not sure about it.

Some time back, I decided to give up using Windows and switch to Linux (Fedora). An IT friend installed it and then he had to leave. I tried installing my USB modem on my own- with great courage! I hunted for threads in support forums, read help files, consulted experts on-line, cut/paste some 'config' file- I did many things blindly - and suddenly the USB modem was blinking! I had a breakthrough!

When I joined TISA, it opened for me a whole new world. Lots of people to interact. People who dealt the same problem as me, and more importantly people who I could relate with very well. As I began interacting with more and more people, I got exposed to different perspectives about stammering and related stuff. But I was often met with a very common question - "What is the meaning of your ID - Silent Scream?" So here I am, writing down the story behind the silent scream..!

Mr Peerbhai started this idea: sharing our paths to recovery. Stammering has been compared to a bog (daldal): Many paths lead to it. And many paths lead out of it. Sometime, we tend to believe that my path is the only path; that my path will suit everyone else. This is far from the facts as we know today. In a nutshell- factors which cause stuttering in first place (early childhood) are often quite different from the factors which cause stuttering to persist in adolescence and adult life.
