This time we
adopted the Toastmasters model for the TISA meeting. There was a late fee in
place and as a result everyone was in the room 10 min before the scheduled start
time. The event was held at a Toddlers school in Banjara Hills which had a nice
ambiance with a closed room and cartoon characters all over the walls.

time. The event was held at a Toddlers school in Banjara Hills which had a nice
ambiance with a closed room and cartoon characters all over the walls.
Everyone’s role was
decided before hand and the expectation from their role in the meet was
explained. The event started up with a formal introduction of the ground rules
by the moderator of the day. This was followed by three prepared speeches. Each
speaker was given a minimum time of 4 minutes and a maximum time of 6 minutes.
The first speaker spoke about the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and his life.
The second speaker presented his own life events in front of the audience in a cinematic
narrative style which kept the audience laughing throughout the speech. The
third speaker presented his life story drawing parallels with current
happenings and metaphors. Audience rated the best speaker out of the three
speakers via a confidential vote. Also each speaker had a dedicated evaluator
who has to give his evaluation of the speech to the whole group. And there was
a Table topics master who would give a topic to everyone to speak for 2 min.
The best table topics speaker was again voted by the audience.

There was a grammarian
whose job is to identify the grammatical mistakes in the speeches. He would at
the end announce the grammatical mistakes without pointing out anyone. There is
Timer who would keep track of time taken by each speaker and show appropriate
green, yellow and red flags. There is a vote counter whose job is to count the
votes and announce the results of best speaker, best evaluator and best table
topics speaker. The persons who won these titles were given nice little
colorful badges amid applause.

The best part of this
model is everyone gives a written feedback to every speaker which must include
two positives and one improvement area. This goes a long way in making the PWS
confident about his speech and himself. The event was
ended with few Samosas and Hyderabadi Chai. By the end of the event, everyone
was filled with a positive sense of achievement and were motivated to go out
and speak.
