Un-mask

TISA Bangalore Shg meeting: 04/08/24.

Note: The following is the report from the self-help meeting in Bangalore on  4th August. The report is from Tapan Samantha, one of the participants. These self-help meetings happened across India- Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, etc. More information can be found on the TISA website. The joining details are at the end.

Participants: (From right) Naveen, Praveen,Vinayak,Tapan, Dinesh, Gowtham, George, Ananth, Rajnikanth, Gayatri, Pallavi.

After the elaborate Speech craft session, once again SHG has started at Samarthanam an NGO for the blind in JP Nagar, Bangalore. I thought of bunking this week and taking a break but at the same time, I was afraid of loosing the momentum and pushing myself to be present there. I was surprised to see two young interns at TISA, Gayathri and Pallavi, they are stuyding masters in psycology. They wanted to share some time with us and explore the PWS psychology and help us in dealing with the anxiety and trauma associated with stammering.

The meeting was scheduled at 9am. But as some birthday celebration was going on at the venue, we got the room little late at 9.30.

They ensured that the room was clean after the birthday celebration before they handed it over to us. A young blind person,  Nagraj was the one in-charge for us. He moved swiftly here and there by loudly screaming ‘side’ ‘side’.It sounded a little rude but logically thinking he doesn’t want to bump into others. The same person came to our room and asked us for Coffee or Tea and showed a lot of generosity. Generally lot of times we misjudge a person in a very short encounter, which is totally wrong!!.

We got 2 new members today, Geroge from Kerala and Dr. Rajanikant from Gulberga.
One by one all of us shared our stammering journey and were asked to disclose the shame and guilt we felt fully while growing up with it. So, everyone opened the lid and poured the can. Many insects and cockroaches came out of it. Being a doctor, Rajanikant also had been given some anti-depressant/ anti-anxiety tablets which had failed on him.

In the real world we generally wear a stammering mask or have a cripling mindset about it, but it is only in an SHG we un-mask ourselves and present our authentic self. It results in tremendous emotional healing from the inside and as a byproduct we think better and speak better.

Dinesh pointed out a nice fact about SHG- In the real world we always wear a stammering mask or such mindset but it is only in an SHG we un-mask ourselves and present the real of us. That results tremendous emotional healing from inside and as a byproduct we think better and speak better. Next few of us sharing the benefits out of active and regular participation at SHG meeting. It is like a drip irrigation of the garden of your psychological world, the more the merrier.

Later Gayathri and Pallavi took over the mike and shared how they could help us out to deal with the bad emotions and simultaneously it also helps them to build up their research project. It will be a win-win situation. They also promised to help us out in any other emotional and psychological issue caused by the facts other than the stammering.

At the end we bade good bye to Vinayak with heavy heart. He joined in 2018 as a school boy and now Bangalore SHG transformed him into a man. He is the icon of active and regular participation at SHG. Now he got a prime job at TCS Mumbai and Bangalore SHG is responsible for that, he confessed. Wish the Mumbai SHG get benefited out of Vinayak. Hrithik Roshan is eagerly waiting to meet him and he promised to take selfie with him and post it. Wish him all the best.
